Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak) is the fourth highest mountain in Sri
Lanka (2244 m). It is located 40Km Northeast from the Ratnapura City. From
Colombo it is around 135Km. Adam’s Peak surrounded by forestly hills and
animals. There is a season which we can visit the Sri Pada. It’s starts from
Full Moon poya day in December and end on Full moon poya day in April. Sri Pada
is calling as Samanala Kanda also, because in the Sri Pada season hundreds of
butter flies are flying to the way of the mountain.
According to the ‘Mahawansa’ the
historical chronicle of Sri Lanka the ‘Lord Buddha’ visited the country three
times. It was during the last sojourn of the ‘Lord Buddha’, at the request of
the god of Sri Pada ‘God Maha Suman Saman’, the footprint was implanted upon
the peak of Sri Pada.
The person who visit the Sri Pada at first time
called as ‘Kodukarayaa’ and he has to take all the stuff the others carrying
and have to make sweets to the others. The lot of people are staring their
journey in the evening and wait till the sunrise. And we can ring the bells in
the peak as per the numbers we visited. If you visited two times you have to
ring it two times. In Sinhala we call to
the sun rise time to ‘Ira Sewaya’. When it was just about to sun rise at the
peak, the pilgrims and tourists rush to the eastern side of peak. The sun
almost leaps over the horizon; it is not a gradual rise. Having seen it, all
move to the western side of the peak.
