Kumana
National Park is well known as a Bird Sanctuary in Sri Lanka. It is located in
Hambanthota in the Eastern side of Yala National Park. It was declared in 1938 and
where is one of the most important birds breed and roost. Tens of thousands
birds migrate to Kumana marsh area during April and July annually.
Regular
sightings include Pelicans, Spoonbills, White Ibis, Herons, and Painted Storks
etc… We can be seen the very rare Black Necked Stork at the swamp. In addition to
the birds Kumana is also home to Leopards and Elephants also.
Other than
the watching Birds and Animals, you can have an experience in Safari Camps
which is located near the waterside of the Kumbukkan River. Kumbukkan River
gets its name because in the area there are huge numbers of Kumbuk trees. You
can access only by the 4WD vehicles to the Camp Site Area.
