NAGADEEPA TEMPLE (NAGADIPA) SRI LANKA

Nagadeepa (Nagadipa) is one of the ancient places in Sri Lanka situate at Jaffna District in Northern Province. There is 404Km distance in between Jaffna and Colombo. The access to Nagadeepa is from the village of Kurikattuwan (Kurikadduwan) of the island of Punkudutivu: by a boat ride of 20 minutes.

According to the Mahawansa, in the 6th Century BC during the second visit of Lord Buddha the two Naga Kings of Nagadeepa were arrayed in battle for a Gem Set Throne. The ancient Nagadeepa Temple is surrounding with the Image House and the Stupa, which the Gem Set Throne was protected. Later the ancient Stupa had been destroyed and the Buddhist Temple which we visit present is a modern one.

The modern Nagadeepa Stupa is painted in Silver in an attempt to protect its limestone structure from the harsh Sea – Wind.
