PERAHERA FESTIVAL IN SRI LANKA


In Sri Lanka there are number of  Perahera festivals are Starting on July or August and ending on September. Like Kandy Esala Maha Perahera, Nawam Maha Perahera, Kotte Raja Maha Vihara Perahera, Bellanwila Raja Maha Vihara Perahera, Kataragama Perahera etc... And all traditional dancers are participating this festival with their children and grand children. 

Esala Maha Perahera is the grand festival of Esala held in Sri Lanka. It is very grand with elegant costumes. Happening in July or August in Kandy, it has become a unique symbol of Sri Lanka. It is a Buddhist festival consisting of dances and nicely decorated elephants. There are fire-dancers, whip-dances, Kandian dancers and various other cultural dancers. The elephants are usually adorned with lavish garments. This Perahera is lengthy, because it contains five parts including Sathara Maha Dewala and Dalada Perahera. The festival ends with the traditional 'Diya-kepeema'.

The Colombo Nawam Maha Perahera is one of the most important religious and cultural events in Sri Lanka. Millions of people view this spectacle every year including an estimated 10,000 Tourists. Seating accommodation for 1,000,000 persons is provided without charge on both days. The Perehara revives the ancient forms drawing dancing troupes from all parts of the country and providing an occasion to display their prowess. The beneficiaries of events such as these are the traditional Dance Troupes, who now enjoy a revival of interest in their dance and forms of entertainment. The Perehera thus has a direct relevance to the preservation of Sri Lanka ancient Cultural Heritage.
