Kirinda is situated Matara District in Southern Province in
Sri Lanka. According to the legendary King Kelanitissa the father of Queen
Viharamaha Devi, punished a monk by put him to the boiling oil cauldron and
threw the dead monk to the Ocean.
Then the angered Gods create a Tsunami and the astrologers
of the kingdom said to the King that the only way to survive from the Tsunami
is sacrifice the most beautiful virgin to the ocean. After that Queen
Viharamaha Devi is agreed to sacrifice herself to rescue the people and the
country from the Tsunami. The place which Queen Viharamaha Devi sacrificed to
the ocean is known as Kirinda.
